Your posts are my new "guilty pleasure...Dick,

Your posts are my new "guilty pleasure." Some boring life, eh?

I had to look at the model used in this MPI analysis and was quite surprised to find that it involved only addition and a bit of multiplication.

Imagine my further surprise when I flipped to the appendix tables and found that the town of Hamilton only has 1.5% of the population over 25 with a high school diploma! Further digging led me to conclude that in order to suggest large differences where little ones exist MPI has normalized the range of observed values to a 0-100 scale. In fact almost all the towns in the study have 25+ HS diploma rates of over 85%.

Hamilton is not a listed place in the census quickfacts source cited in the report, but the rating given Hamilton suggests an approximately 80% HS diploma rate. In fact Ravalli County as a whole has has a 90.7% rate for the period. Hmmm.

Now I might just be misunderstanding the calculation of this specific component of the MPI "allure ranking"

In any case, without being dubbed a "regionalist" I would suggest that any ranking of "Community Allure" with Glendive at the top and Missoula and Hamilton at the bottom warrants a bit of scrutiny.

Chris Nehernoreply@blogger.com
